For the past few months, I have been working with a great new client, Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School or “Monty Tech” as it’s more commonly known. Below is a project profile on our newest project together, which was a 50th Anniversary book that highlights the success of their alumni and celebrates future students.
Monty Tech is a vocational school in Fitchburg and Westminster, Massachusetts, which teaches 20 different trades to approximately 1,450 students from 18 cities and towns.
With 20 innovative vocational-technical programs to choose from, their students are gaining skills that may be the foundation for a successful career in their chosen field, providing them with basic skills that they carry with them for a lifetime.
The Development Coordinator and the Dean of Admissions reached out to me last fall with the goal of working with a local designer that could help in developing some new materials that would showcase the school, its programs and its students. As well as strengthen the Monty brand.
The end result of our newest project together is a 24 page book that highlights the amazing alumni and accomplishments of Monty. In addition to alumni profiles, there is a section of black and white photos that shows the school through the years, a school committee listing and a page of great stats and numbers. All in all, it’s a great profile of the school and the amazing students that are proud alumni.
Phase 1 of every project of this size begins with a discovery meeting. This is when I meet with the client in person and sit down with all of the core decision makers. From that initial discovery meeting, we will have a unified plan in place to move forward with.
The next step is this particular project was to develop initial concepts. As I gathered all of the various materials (photos, wording, scans, stats) that were sent over by the Monty team, I needed to paint a picture of what the overall finished product could look like. This is known as art direction and it is where I develop an idea of the overall look and feel which includes the color pallet, font set, typographic style, and general aesthetic.
“Selecting Spin350 to help us update our recruiting and marketing materials was the right choice. Joe has been a true professional, offering creative solutions and ideas, and always keeping our projects on time and on budget. I look forward to our next project!”
– Katy Whitaker, Development Coordinator, Monty Tech
Once the initial concept pdf was approved, I moved into the layout phase, which included building style sheets, editing photos, flowing content, modifying typography, and general page flow.
After multiple rounds of editing, photo swapping and making content tweaks that worked best for the overall layout, we were ready to go to print.
Printing and Production
This piece was Monty Tech’s 5oth anniversary book, so the printing needed to be top quality and stand out as a showcase piece. We agreed upon an uncoated Finch paper stock, perfect binding and gold foil stamping on the front and back covers.
